Unity 7: what was announced at Unite Seoul
A CoreCLR core, near-instant Play Mode and an upgrade that Unity says will not require rebuilding your project. Beta in December, full release in early 2027.

Unity announced Unity 7 at Unite Seoul on July 21, 2026. Early beta testing starts in December, and the full release is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027 (Unity). That is roughly a year ahead of Unreal Engine 6's Early Access target.
The headline is not a feature. It is how Unity plans to get there without breaking projects.
The upgrade promise
Unity describes Unity 7 as a direct continuation of Unity 6. Moving from 6 to 7 is meant to feel like the 6.x updates teams have already done (Unity 7).
That is not the same as "nothing changes". Unity expects the usual kinds of breaking change:
- obsolete APIs becoming errors
- packages moving into the engine
- higher minimum platform versions
- deprecated features being removed
What it does not expect is anything that forces you to rebuild a project or rewrite a codebase. During the alpha, Unity will post a thread on Unity Discussions that lists the planned breaking changes and keeps it updated through release.
The mechanism behind the promise: the foundational pieces of Unity 7, including CoreCLR and the new Surface Cache GI, ship and get tested in production inside Unity 6 releases first. By the time the version number changes, the foundation underneath has already moved (Tech Times).
CoreCLR, and why iteration gets faster
Unity has run C# on Mono, an older open-source .NET runtime, since the engine began. Unity 7 is built on CoreCLR, Microsoft's modern .NET runtime. Unity is promising three things from it (Unity):
- a near-instant Play Mode
- domain reloads that only touch the code that changed
- shader builds up to 90% faster
Domain reloads are the part most Unity developers feel. When you edit a script, Unity reloads the scripting domain: it throws away managed state, loads the assemblies again and reruns static initialisers. On a large project that takes seconds, every time. Limiting the reload to changed code is where the faster Play Mode comes from.
One practical way to prepare: if your project already runs with Enter Play Mode Options set to skip domain reload, you have probably done the cleanup that faster reloads tend to expose. That means static fields that need resetting and events that need unsubscribing.
Tools for the whole team
A new CLI and public API let people validate assets, push builds and work from their own tools without opening the Editor. Unity is also releasing a free MCP server so coding agents can connect to Unity directly.
Graphics
Surface Cache GI brings realtime global illumination that is meant to scale from high-end PCs down to mobile.
Monetization
Native direct-to-consumer in-app purchases, no-code webshops and unified catalogues feed purchase data back into Unity Vector, the AI system behind Unity Ads.
What to do now
- Stay on a supported Unity 6 release. The pieces of Unity 7 arrive there first.
- Watch the breaking-changes thread once the alpha starts, and check it against the APIs your project uses.
- Test the beta on a branch, not on the copy your team works in every day.
