Integration

3ds Max

Place vault assets in your scene and upload a .max with the bitmaps it uses.

What the dock does

LoreOwl → LoreOwl Vault, from the menu bar. It opens a dock with a Vault tab and an Upload tab.

Browse the vault

Filter by type and refresh the list without leaving 3ds Max.

Place selected

Downloads the selected assets. Tick Import after download to bring them into the scene.

Honest imports

If an import adds nothing to the scene, the dock says so instead of reporting success.

Upload the scene

Uploads the .max with the bitmaps it uses. Files the vault already has are linked, not sent again.

Files outside the folder

Left out by default, and the dock tells you. Tick Include files outside the scene's folder to send them.

Export and upload

Exports the scene in the format you pick and uploads that instead.

Export formats

Formats
FBX (the default), OBJ, Alembic, COLLADA, glTF and 3DS.
glTF
Export only. 3ds Max cannot import glTF, so it cannot be placed back into Max.
3DS
A legacy format with a 64-character name limit and no modern materials.
Not offered
STL and USD.

Sign in once, in the app

No pairing code to type and no token to paste.

When you sign in to the LoreOwl desktop app, it writes a short-lived credential to a file in your user profile, and the 3ds Max dock reads it. Sign out and it is removed.

  • No refresh token is stored, so the file only ever holds a short-lived access token
  • Written in one step, so a host never reads half a file
  • Every host integration uses the same credential, so one sign-in covers all of them

Installing it

From the Integrations page in the LoreOwl app. It finds the app's settings folder for you.

What it installs
An Autodesk application plug-in, LoreOwlVault, in %APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins.
Versions
3ds Max 2025, 2026 and 2027 on 64-bit Windows. One install covers all of them.
Then
  1. Restart 3ds Max.
  2. Open the LoreOwl menu at the right end of the menu bar and choose “LoreOwl Vault”.
Custom locations
Add a folder by hand, for example a portable install. Folders you add stay after a rescan.
Uninstalling
Removes only what the install added.

What it does not do

  • No version control or file locks in 3ds Max. Those stay in the desktop app.
  • No placing glTF back into Max.
  • No STL export.
  • 3ds Max 2025 to 2027 only.
  • Windows only, because the desktop app that signs it in is.
